Developing suturing confidence in Registered Veterinary Nurses: Skills, scope, and inclusive learning
Friday, July 3, 2026, 10:00 AM - 10:50 AM | VEC Clinical Skills Room | Practical | Nursing, Clinical Skills
This practical-focused session explores the importance of suturing as a core Schedule 3 skill for Registered Veterinary Nurses (RVNs) and Student Veterinary nurses (SVN) and highlights how expanding nurse-led surgical procedures can benefit patient care, team efficiency, and job satisfaction. The presentation addresses common barriers to performing suturing in practice, such as confidence, opportunity, and fear of asking, while offering practical solutions including CPD, low-cost practice methods, and repetition. A strong emphasis is placed on inclusive teaching and learning, recognising the increasing number of neurodivergent veterinary professionals and the need to adapt training approaches accordingly. Reasonable adjustments, varied teaching formats, and psychological safety are discussed as essential components of effective clinical education. The session concludes with a guided practical, providing hands-on experience with suturing equipment and techniques, supported by written SOPs, visual aids, video resources, and one-to-one guidance—mirroring best practice for both student support and lifelong professional development.
Learning Objectives:
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

- Learn how to apply inclusive and supportive teaching strategies to facilitate suturing skills development in students and colleagues, including those who are neurodivergent.
