Dentistry: Be kind to yourself!

Friday, July 3, 2026, 11:40 AM - 12:30 PM | Hugh Owen A12 | Lecture | Dentistry

Dentistry in first-opinion practice can often feel overwhelming, time-pressured, and at times frustrating. This session aims to explore how we approach everyday dental cases, encouraging a more realistic, structured, and self-compassionate mindset. Focusing on common presentations in general practice, the talk will explore recognising limitations and making pragmatic clinical decisions without compromising patient welfare. It will also address the pressures vets place on themselves when outcomes are not perfect, and how to build confidence through incremental improvement rather than perfection. Attendees will hopefully come away with practical tips in their approach to dentistry and managing cases within the constraints of first-opinion practice.

Key Learning Objectives:

  • Develop a structured, practical approach to managing common dental cases in first opinion practice.
  • Recognise personal and clinical limitations and apply appropriate decision-making, including when to stage/refer.
  • Build confidence by adopting realistic expectations and a progressive approach to improving dental skills.
