Common endocrine mistakes in small animal practice

Friday, July 3, 2026, 10:00 AM - 10:50 AM | Hugh Owen A12 | Lecture | Endocrinology

This session will:

  • Examine mistakes in diagnosis and management of common adrenal, thyroid and pancreatic endocrinopathies in small animal practice.
  • Review sensitivity and specificity of diagnostic testing and how this relates to positive and negative predictive values of diagnostic testing.
  • Look at how an understanding of diagnostic test sensitivity and specificity can lead to better diagnostic accuracy.
  • Look at how concurrent disease and medication can alter disease presentation, providing traps for the unwary.

Key Learning Objectives:

  • Recognise the common ‘traps’ in diagnosis of common small animal endocrinopathies.
  • Understand the implication of diagnostic tests’ sensitivity and specificity.
  • Recognise complicating factors that can compromise diagnostic and treatment decisions.
