Brachycephalics: Honest conversations
Friday, July 3, 2026, 9:00 AM - 9:50 AM | Hugh Owen A12 | Lecture |
Brachycephalic breeds present one of the most ethically complex challenges in modern veterinary practice. This talk explores how veterinary professionals can navigate honest conversations with clients about the welfare implications associated with these animals. Drawing on real-world experience implementing one of the UK’s first practice-level brachycephalic policies, as well as insights from clinical work and professional discourse, the session will address the barriers vets face when discussing breed-related health concerns. It will also consider how to communicate sensitively yet effectively, balancing client relationships with advocacy for animal welfare. Attendees will hopefully leave with a greater awareness of this complex topic, encouraged to reflect on its challenges and consider how it informs their own clinical conversations and professional responsibilities.
Key Learning Objectives:
- Explore ethical and professional challenges associated with brachycephalic ownership and veterinary responsibility.
- Develop practical strategies for communicating welfare concerns around brachycephalic breeds with empathy and clarity.
- Explore how practice-level policies can support consistent messaging and improved animal welfare outcomes.
