Friday, July 3, 2026, 11:40 AM - 12:30 PM | Hugh Owen A14 | Lecture | Equine
Equine gastric ulcer syndrome (EGUS) and hindgut ulceration are common painful conditions affecting the welfare and performance of horses in Wales. Using examples and data obtained from over 2000 gastroscopic examinations, this talk will highlight some of the strengths and pitfalls of the common treatments for EGUS. Likewise, the tips for the diagnosis and treatment of hindgut ulcers (right dorsal colitis) will also be discussed. The session will address engaging with owners about management and feeding of horses, to reduce the prevalence of young horses developing ulcers and that of treated horses relapsing following treatment.
Key Learning Objectives:
- Develop a good understanding of the epidemiology and pathogenesis of EGUS and Colonic ulceration.
- Understand the need for different treatments in horses presenting with different types of gastric and colonic ulceration.
- Develop a practical understanding of the role in husbandry and feeding in promoting gastrointestinal health and preventing ulcers developing.
