Veterinary Schools are increasing in number across the United Kingdom and Ireland, in response to the demand for more training or to meet local needs. After a 120-year wait, Wales opened its first vet school in 2021, based in Aberystwyth, in a collaborative venture with the Royal Veterinary College (RVC), London. Students spend their first two years at Aberystwyth and then move to RVC for the following three years, returning to Wales for short periods of clinical training or extra-mural studies. Many people ask if, or when, Wales will host a full vet programme in Aberystwyth. In this presentation, we will explore factors for and against a full school and what is required from the veterinary profession and other stakeholders to deliver a five-year programme.
