Arrhythmias in the dog: 10,000 hours to become an expert, but only 20 hours to be proficient
Friday, July 3, 2026, 1:40 PM - 2:30 PM | Hugh Owen A12 | Lecture | Cardiology
Arrhythmias, and ECGs in general, are a complex and confusing area of veterinary medicine. A thorough understanding of ECG physiology and arrhythmia pathophysiology takes a lifetime to master, but thankfully there are a few common arrhythmias that you can learn to quickly recognise and manage. In this lecture Dave will discuss diagnosis and management of atrial fibrillation, ventricular tachycardia (and its oft misunderstood cousin, accelerated idioventricular rhythm) and complete heart block.
Key Learning Objectives:
- The ECG findings of AF, VT, AIVR and 3rd degree AV block.
- Atrial fibrillation management.
- Ventricular tachycardia management.
- Accelerated idioventricular management.
- 3rd Degree AV block management.
Following this session, join Dave Dickson in Medrus 3 (14:40-15:30) for an ECG Cases: Small Group Seminar, which will continue this topic of practical management of arrhythmias in dogs; and in small groups will look at a collection of ECGs in detail from diagnosis to management.
