Antimicrobial stewardship in wound care
Thursday, July 2, 2026, 10:00 AM - 10:50 AM | Penbryn Medrus 4 | Lecture | Wound Management
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global One Health threat, and veterinary teams play a crucial role in preventing it. This session explores responsible antimicrobial use in wound care, highlighting when antimicrobial dressings are indicated and how to align product choice with the phase of healing. We will examine the power of wound bed preparation in reducing microbial burden and biofilm, often without pharmaceuticals. Attendees will leave with practical, evidence-based strategies to improve healing outcomes while supporting antimicrobial stewardship in clinical practice.
Key Learning Objectives:
- Describe the principles of AMR and explain its relevance within a One Health framework.
- Differentiate between antimicrobial wound products and identify the phases of healing in which their use is clinically appropriate.
- Analyse wound presentations to determine when debridement and wound hygiene can reduce microbial burden without antimicrobials.
