Staying a step ahead: A practical evidence based approach to managing lameness in sheep
Thursday, July 2, 2026, 9:00 AM - 9:50 AM | Hugh Owen A14 | Lecture | Farm & Livestock
To investigate lameness in sheep a methodical approach is required to diagnose the conditions present and to formulate a plan for treatment and control. A holistic and practical approach to lameness control is required whereby an understanding of the risk factors for sheep developing contagious foot diseases is applied to individual farm situations. Biosecurity and quarantine practices can usually be improved on most farms, and identifying lame sheep early, treating them with an appropriate product, and isolating them from unaffected sheep if possible are all likely to be beneficial. Vaccination may be useful in some flocks, together with culling policies and limiting spread in areas associated with high transmission.
Key Learning Objectives:
- Develop a good understanding of the aetiology and epidemiology of infectious foot diseases.
- Understand the evidence behind the Five Point Plan for lameness.
- Develop a practical understanding of controlling infectious lameness on sheep farms.
